Description.

The Voyager shelter is a product in the high quality vandal resistant range of shelters, waiting rooms, kiosks and canopies.  The material specifications have been chosen in consultation with Network Rail to ensure this gained an approved product status.  A popular choice of product for the Train Operating Companies  with hundreds of installations throughout the UK.  Largely constructed with stainless steel and aluminium extrusions, key features of the design include, no visible fixings, range of DDA compliant seating, high efficiency LED lighting system, concealed drainage and a choice of various glazing options (3 split or 9 split panels).  The modular nature of the construction allows us to logistically manage the installation of the products which are often required at restricted sites i.e. carrying through underpasses or over bridges is common practice.  A full managed package of civil engineering works can be provided to carry out the demolition of the existing structure, foundations, drainage, re- surfacing works, retaining walls etc.  A staff of specialist installation engineers are fully trained and experienced for carrying out this specialist work, all of which retain Personal Track Safety (PTS) certificates.

Diverse material usage The walkway featured stainless steel posts covered with a fabricated aluminium vaulted roof. LED lighting was designed into the walkway gutter sections. Managing complexity State-of–the-art 3D Computer Aided Design tools enabled the creation of early visualizations of the scheme to aid the approval process, as well as  resolving the complex component manufacture and construction. The station was in use by the public throughout the construction program. Rigorous site management ensured maximum passenger safety while causing the minimum level of disruption.

Rail  Waiting Structures were commissioned to work with Bilfinger Berger to design and develop practical solutions for ambitious and demanding bespoke stainless steel shelters and other platform furniture designs. These included seating and way-finding. Following the design phase we went on to  manufacturing and installing the products. Challenging material usage The client’s aesthetic  designs featured clean curved surfaces in mainly stainless steel. Fixings needed to be invisible.  Utilizing our skills and experience of designing and manufacturing in a wide-range of materials   including glass and composites,  first-class results were achieved. Managing complexity State-of–the-art 3D Computer Aided Design tools enabled the creation of early visualizations of the scheme to aid the approval process, as well as  resolving the complex component manufacture and construction. The site was demanding particularly due to access and winter installation. We also needed to work closely with the other civil contractors working on-site.  Planning and communication was key to be able to meet the requirements of the client so the project management was undertaken locally through our Scottish office personnel.

The Croydon Tramlink scheme was developed in a joint venture with Amey and McAlpine.  This system has been a huge success and currently carries almost 2 million people per month, making this the most successful tram system in the UK.  Studies have shown the system has removed 4 million car journeys per year from London’s congested roads.  The scheme links Wimbledon to Beckenham Junction.  The development of this scheme involved a suite of platform furniture to include, shelters, seating, fencing, signage, advertising panels & litter bins.  The shelter structures were constructed with a structural steel frame hot-dipped galvanised to BS EN ISO 1461:2009 with a polyester powder coated finish.  The 10mm thick glazing was securely retained with purpose designed aluminium extrusions.  The design included a single cantilever and double “gull-wing” option with a range of canopy widths and shelter lengths to suit the individual platform constraints.

Rail  Waiting Structures  were awarded this bespoke project to construct a modern station building incorporating a Ticket Office, Toilets, Kitchen and other rooms. Working from initial architect drawings and comprehensive National Building Specifications we designed, manufactured and installed the complete solution. Special site challenges Overhead power lines dictated that no cranes  or elevated works were possible. A major part of the project was to design a roof that could be jacked-up into position from the ground level. Managing complexity State-of–the-art 3D Computer Aided Design tools were used to resolving the complex component manufacture and construction.  Materials were mixed, including steelwork, aluminium fabrications, stainless steel, Kingspan panels and rain-screen tiled cladding. The small site had difficult access for the  construction requiring careful logistics planning while rigorous site and Health & Safety management ensured a safe and efficient  installation process.

What appears to be a simple and elegant screen was in fact quite a complex project which required considerable forethought and planning by the design and installation teams.

Follow this road for 5.7km until the T junction with the A48.  Turn left on to the A48 and then immediately right onto the B4268 towards Llantwit Major.
